In accordance with BS 5266, you are legally required to perform a risk assessment, installing emergency lighting where necessary. This standard for planning laws in addition to a requirement in the IEE (Institute of Electrical Engineering) electrical wiring regulations (17th edition).
The British Standard 5266 details the code of practice for the testing and annual inspection of emergency lighting systems.

The BS 5266 regulations and the 17th IEE electrical regulations state that an annual visit is required to ensure that the battery in these systems remains fully operational.
Depending on atmospheric conditions, batteries can be expected to last up to 5 years before a full replacement is required.
During an engineer inspection, each light will be inspected individually, with a minimum time capacity of three hours.
As part of British Standards, any business with fitted emergency lighting requires annual servicing to protect both employees and the public.
During an engineer’s visit, the lighting system will need to be turned off. This may cause minor disruption if the emergency lighting is connected to the main lighting system. The flexible engineer will try to mitigate the of the disruption and work around your business.
